Your goal is to make your opponent's energy bar go down to 0, and you do this through one means: staying ahead for as long as possible. As the race goes on, the energy bar depletes for the car that's trailing, and remains constant for the car that's ahead. Both you and your opponent have an energy bar at the top of the screen.

The race isn't time-based, nor is it a race to the finish line. If you manage to goad the other motorist into it, you'll enter into a one on one race against the car. Of course, if you're a real adventurer, and you want to get the most out of your purchase, you'll drive up behind one of the other cars like any good hoodlum and flash your high beams.

With no time limit, checkpoints, or finish lines to get in your way, you're free to drive around endlessly during this part, being a good citizen and obeying the rules of the road. Instead, you're driving amongst a wide variety of other vehicles, of varying sizes (including trucks). Unlike most racers, you're not alone on the track. Upon entering the game's quest mode, and buying a car of your choosing, you take to the track and begin driving around.

Tokyo Extreme Racing is based on the idea of gang-oriented highway racing, which revolves around challenging other drivers to races.

It turns out that all these faults manage to disappear once you've started to play the game. with that many bad points, you may be wondering how exactly the words 'unbelievably addicted' managed to appear in the first paragraph. Yeah, it's a reeeally long one and you can race in forward or reverse directions, but you're always racing along the same stretch of road in the same late night environment, which can get old. Finally, and this is REALLY annoying, the game has only one track. The sound, however, is very unimpressive the music itself fits the game well, but the sound effects are unrealistic. Also, the graphics aren't quite up to the level of other Dreamcast racers such as Rally 2 and Buggy Heat they're still good, but not great. There are no real cars housed within this particular racer Genki managed to make cars that look moderately like the real thing, but you're not going to see the words Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, or Nissan in this game. Renamed for its stateside debut, Tokyo Extreme Racing's Japanese title, Shutokou Highway Battle, does a great job of encapsulating it's unique experience after countless hours of playing, I've grown unbelievable addicted to it.įirst off, let's get some of the game's bad points out of the way. The game takes the standard notion of a racing game, a genre which I'd previously assumed had seen just about every possible gameplay approach exhausted, and creates an original experience based on a familiar concept found in a completely different genre: one-on-one fighting. Tokyo Extreme Racing, developed by Genki and coming to America via Crave Entertainment, is a great example. I just love it when developers take an age-old genre and manage to do something original with it. So, will the game take the racing crown on September 9th? It has some competition coming from TNN Hardcore Heat and Sega's own Flag to Flag (among others, no doubt), so you'll have to wait for our reviews of all these games before making your purchasing decision. Of course, it looks like we're never going to see the streets of Tokyo during the daylight, but we'll have to play the game more fully in order to see just how much Crave has added.

You still get the same game, full of originality and unique ideas, along with the same hyper-cool music. Other than that, and an apparent increase in difficulty, Tokyo Extreme Racer seems to be just Shutokou Battle with the Crave logo and a new name. Driving feels slightly better in the American version, as you feel like you're more closely connected to your car. In comparison to the American version, the Japanese version seems to be just a bit too loose. The change in control is quite subtle in fact, I didn't even notice that anything had changed at all, until I popped in the Japanese version after having played through the American quick race mode for about a half-hour.
